Haapsalu Primary School building

Siksak is an entry and II prize winner for an open architecture competiton to find the best solution for a new school building in Haapsalu. The team behind Siksak consisted of Karin Tõugu, Aet Ader, Mari Hunt, Kadri Klementi, Mari Möldre, Arvi Anderson, Zane Kalnina and Nele Šverns.

Situated in Western Estonia, Haapsalu is a small town with just over 10000 people. It is a popular summer resort with lovely wooden architecture as well as gorgeous promenade by the Baltic sea.

Siksak is a comfortable, contemporary and supportive learing environment for students of Haapsalu. The architectural form represents the function of the building with dignity and class. It is very much influenced by the existing cityscape of nearby areas while bringing new value to the site itself.

The site plan and movement logic was created by analyzing the area, bringing main entrance to the place that is most used by people. Space between existing and new building becomes an comfortable and active public space.

Exterior of the building is of red brick and wooden siding. Using different materials creates warmth and has a human-friendly vibe. Brick and wood also refer to the most common and characteristical materials used in Haapsalu.

Interior of the building is characterized by the use of concrete and wood. Lots of air space between different floors have been created with natural light from skylights distributing between floors, making it a healthy, transparent and positive room for students.

Classrooms are placed in the perimeter of the building allowing maximum amount of daylight in to the classrooms. The middle part of the building becomes a multifunctional area with plenty of room for learning, playing, socializing or just being alone in your thoughts.

The building functions together with the public space around it. The inside of the school can be easily linked with outside areas.  Each classroom on the first floor has an exit. Students can use the out-door auditorium shaped as an amphitheatre or just spend active time in fresh air.
